Last time we were talking

0:21  about the future of man.

0:32  All the psychologists,
as far as I can understand,

0:40  are they really concerned ...
with the future of man?

0:44  Or are they concerned

0:50  with the human being ...
conforming to the present society,

0:55  or going beyond that? D:

0:58  David Bohm: ...
I think that most psychologists

1:00  evidently want the human being ...
to conform to this society,

1:04  but I think some psychologists ...

1:06  – some of whom
will be listening to us –

1:08  are thinking of ...
going beyond that,

1:10  to transform the consciousness ...
of mankind.

1:13  K: Can the consciousness of mankind K:
be changed through time?

1:19  That is one of the questions
we should discuss this evening.

1:22  DB: Yes. We have actually D:
discussed it, last time,

1:27  and I think what came out was: ...

1:34  with regard to consciousness, ...
time is not relevant, ของจิตสำนึก

1:36  that it is a kind of illusion.

1:38  We discussed the illusion
of becoming.

1:44  K: We are saying, aren't we K:

1:50  that the evolution ...

1:55  is a fallacy.

1:57  DB: As through time, right? D:

2:00  Though physical evolution is not. ...

2:05  Can we put it this way,
much more simply:

2:08  There is no ...
psychological evolution,

2:13  or the evolution of the psyche. ...

2:16  DB: Yes, and since the future ...
of mankind depends on the psyche,

2:22  it seems then that ...
the future of mankind

2:25  is not going to be determined K:
through actions in time.

2:29  And then that left us D:
the question: what will we do?

let's proceed from there.

2:37  K: Shouldn't we first distinguish ...
between the brain and the mind?

2:45  DB: That distinction has been made,
and it is not clear.

there are several views.

2:51  One view is to say that the mind
is just a function of the brain

2:55  – that is the materialist view. ...

2:57  There is another view

2:58  mind and brain
are two different things.

3:01  K: Yes, I think they are K:
two different things.

3:05  DB: But there must be... D:

3:07  K: A contact between the two. D:
A relationship between the two. K:

3:11  DB: We don't necessarily imply D:
any separation of the two.

3:16  K: First let's see the brain. K:

3:21  I am really not an expert ...

3:25  on the structure of the brain
and all that kind of thing.

3:32  But one can observe ...
one's own activity of the brain,

3:36  that it is ...
really like a computer คอมพิวเตอร์...

3:39  that has been programmed ...
and remembers.

3:43  DB: Certainly a large part D:
of the activity is that way,

3:46  but one is not certain ...
that all of it is that way.

3:50  And it is conditioned. K:
DB: Yes. D:

3:57  by the society, by the newspapers, ...
by the magazines, นิตยสาร โดยกิจกรรมทั้งหมด...

4:01  by all the activities and pressure ...
from the outside.

4:07  It is conditioned. ...

4:10  DB: What do you mean D:
by this conditioning?

4:12  K: It is programmed, it is made K:
to conform to a certain pattern,

4:20  it lives entirely on the past, ...

4:26  modifying itself ...
with the present and going on.

4:32  DB: We have agreed that D:
some of this conditioning

4:34  is useful and necessary. ...

4:36  K: Of course.
We discussed that last time.

4:38  DB: But the conditioning D:
which determines the self,

4:43  which determines ...

4:45  K: The psyche. D:...
DB: You call it the psyche.

4:48  K: Let's call it for the moment K:
the psyche. The self.

4:51  DB: The self, the psyche, D:
  K:หรือตัวตน

4:52  that conditioning D:
is what you are talking about.

4:56  That may not only be unnecessary
but harmful.

4:58  K: Yes, that is what K:
we were discussing too.

5:05  The emphasis on the psyche D:

5:09  – as we are doing now – K:

5:10  and giving importance ...
to the self

5:13  is creating great damage ...
in the world, อย่างใหญ่หลวงแก่โลก...

5:17  because it is separative ...

5:22  and therefore it is ...

5:29  not only within itself
but with the society,

5:32  with the family and so on. ...

5:34  DB: Yes. And it is also D:
in conflict with nature.

5:37  K: With the whole universe, K:
if you can call it.

5:40  DB: I think we discussed last time D:
that the conflict arose because

5:44  K: of the division. K:...

5:46  DB: The division arising D:...
because thought is limited,

5:49  being based K:
on this conditioning,

5:51  on this knowledge and memory, D:
it is limited.

5:54  K: And experience is limited, ...
therefore knowledge is limited, K:ครับจำกัดแคบ

5:58  memory and thought.

6:00  Thought is limited, ...

6:02  and the very structure
and the nature of the psyche ของตัวตน...

6:07  is the movement of thought ...
in time.

6:11  DB: I would like
to ask a question:

6:12  when you discuss
the movement of thought,

6:14  it doesn't seem clear to me
what is moving.

6:16  I discussed the movement of my hand, ...
that is a real movement.

6:20  It is clear what is meant.

6:22  But when I discuss the movement
of thought, it seems to me

6:25  we are discussing something
which is a kind of illusion,

6:28  because you have said, ...
becoming is the movement of thought.

6:35  K: That is what I mean, D:
the movement in becoming.

6:38  DB: But you are saying that movement K:
is in some way illusory, aren't you?

6:41  K: Yes, of course. D:

6:42  DB: But it is rather like K:
the movement on the screen

6:45  which is projected ...
from the projector,

6:49  and we say that there are no objects K:
moving across the screen, D:จากกล้องถ่ายภาพ

6:52  but the only real movement
is the turning of the projector.

6:55  Now, can we say that there is
a real movement in the brain

6:58  which is projecting all this,
which is the conditioning?

7:02  K: That is what I want to find out. ...
Let's discuss that a bit.

7:06  K: We both agree, or see,
that the brain is conditioned.

7:10  DB: And we mean by that

7:12  that really, it has been D:

7:15  and chemically. K:
  D:ทางเคมี

7:17  K: Genetically, K:ทางพันธุกรรม
as well as psychologically.

7:20  DB: Well, what is the difference D:
of physically and psychologically?

7:32  it is centred in the self, D:

7:41  and the constant assertion K:
of the self ว่ามีตัวตนเป็นการเคลื่อนไหว...

7:47  is the movement, ...
is the conditioning.

7:51  DB: Yes, but in so far D:
as we experience it,

7:54  that is an illusion, right?

7:56  K: We said that is an illusion. K:

7:57  DB: But there is some D:
real movement happening inside.

8:00  The brain, for example, ...
is doing something.

8:04  It has been conditioned

8:08  and something is happening D:
physically and chemically กำลังเกิดขึ้น...

8:10  when we are ...
thinking of the self.

8:15  K: Are you saying, K:
are you asking rather:

8:21  the brain and the self ...
are two different things?

8:25  DB: No, I am saying the self is the D:
result of conditioning the brain.

The self is conditioning the brain.

8:34  DB: Yes.
But does the self exist?

8:38  K: No. K:ไม่มี ไม่มีครับ

8:39  DB: But the conditioning D:
of the brain, as I see it,

8:42  is involving with an illusion ...
which we call the self.

8:45  K: That is right. K:

8:47  Can that conditioning
be dissipated?

8:52  DB: Yes. D:
K: That is the whole question. K:

8:54  DB: And it really D:
has to be dissipated

8:55  in some physical and chemical ...
and neurophysiological sense. K:ครับ

9:01  Now, the first reaction D:
of any scientific person would be:

9:04  it looks unlikely ...
that we could dissipate it

9:06  by the sort of thing ...
we are doing.

9:08  Some scientists might feel
maybe we will discover drugs,

9:11  or new genetic changes, ...

9:14  or deep knowledge of ...
the structure of the brain,

9:16  and that way we could perhaps
hope to do something.

9:19  I think that idea might be current
among some people.

9:23  K: Will that change K:
the human behaviour?

9:26  DB: Well, why not? I think D:
some people believe it might.

9:32  K: Wait a minute, K:
that is the whole point.

9:34  It might – มันอาจจะ- ซึ่งหมายถึง
which means in the future.

9:38  DB: Yes. It would take time D:
to discover all this.

9:42  K: In the meantime, K:
man is going to destroy himself.

9:45  DB: They might hope that D:
he will manage to do it in time.

9:52  Because they could also criticise
what we are doing,

9:54  the same point, ...
saying what good can it do?

9:57  It doesn't seem

9:59  and certainly not in time ...
to make a big difference.

10:06  That is a question
that would arise.

10:09  K: We two are very clear about it. K:
DB: Yes.

10:13  K: In what way
does it affect humanity?

10:15  DB: Will it affect mankind D:
in time, to really save...

10:19  K: Certainly not.
Obviously not.

10:21  DB: Then why should K:
we be doing it?

10:24  K: Because this is D:
the right thing to do.

10:26  DB: Independently.

10:28  K: It has nothing to do D:
with reward and punishment.

10:31  DB: Or with goals. D:

10:35  DB: You do the right thing, ...
even though we don't know

10:37  what the outcome will be. ...
K: That is right. K:

10:39  DB: You are saying that D:
there is no other way, right?

10:42  K: We are saying that there K:
is no other way, that is right.

10:45  DB: We should make that clear. D:

10:48  For example,
some psychologists would feel that โดยการสืบสอบ...

10:52  by enquiring ...
into this sort of thing,

10:54  we could bring about an evolutionary ...
transformation of consciousness.

10:59  K: We come back to that point K:

11:01  that through time ...
we hope to change consciousness.

K: We question that.

11:10  DB: We have questioned that, ...
and are saying that

11:16  we are all caught in ...

11:18  and we will not know K:
what we are doing.

11:20  Could we say the same thing D:
would hold even for those scientists

11:23  who are trying to do it ...

11:26  or structurally, ...

11:28  that they themselves ...
are still caught in this,

11:30  and through time they are caught ...
in trying to become better.

11:37  They will not know D:
what they are doing really.

11:38  K: Both the experimentalists K:
and the psychologists and ourselves,

11:45  they are all trying ...
to become something.

11:47  K: Yes, though it may not D:
seem obvious at first.

11:50  It may seem that they are

11:53  or unbiased observers ...
working on the problem,

11:58  but underneath you feel there is ...
the desire to become better

12:02  on the part of the person ...
who is doing it,

12:04  but he is not free of that. K:

12:06  K: That is just it. K:
They are not free of that.

12:08  DB: And that desire
will give rise to

12:10  self-deception and illusion D:
and so on.

12:17  K: So where are we now? ...

12:20  That any form of becoming
is an illusion, ไม่ว่ารูปแบบใดเป็นมายา...

12:23  and the becoming implies time, ...

12:27  time for the psyche to change

12:31  – we are saying
time is not necessary.

12:36  DB: Yes, now that ties up D:
with the other question

12:40  of the mind and the brain.

12:43  The brain clearly is to be
understood as an activity in time,

12:46  as a physical, chemical, ...
complex process.

12:52  K: I think the mind is separate K:
from the brain.

12:56  DB: What does it mean, separate, D:
that it is in contact?

12:59  K: Separate in the sense the brain K:
is conditioned and the mind is not.

13:04  DB: Let's say the mind has D:
a certain independence of the brain

13:07  is what you are saying, that even if ...
the brain is conditioned...

13:10  K: The other is not. K:
DB: It need not be conditioned.

13:13  DB: Now, on what basis D:
do you say that?

13:21  K: No, let's begin not on K:
what basis do I say that.

13:25  DB: Or what makes you say it? D:

13:27  K: As long as one's brain, K:

13:30  or the brain is conditioned, ...
it is not free.

13:35  DB: Yes. D:

13:37  K: And the mind is free. K:

13:39  DB: Yes, that is what
you are saying.

13:41  Now, the brain not being free

13:43  means it is not free to enquire ...
in an unbiased way.

13:46  K: I will go into it.
Let's enquire what is freedom.

13:49  DB: Yes. D:

13:50  K: Freedom to enquire K:
as you point out,

13:53  freedom to investigate,

13:56  and it is only in freedom ...
there is deep insight.

14:00  DB: Yes, that is clear, because D:
if you are not free to enquire,

14:04  if you are biased, ...
then you are limited.

14:08  In an arbitrary way. K:

14:10  K: So, as long as the brain K:
is conditioned

14:15  its relationship ...
to the mind is limited.

14:20  DB: We have the relationship D:
of the brain to the mind

14:24  and also the other way round. ...

14:26  K: But the mind being free
has a relationship to the brain.

14:32  We say the mind is free ...
in some sense, อิทธิพลกำหนดของสมอง

14:35  not subject to
the conditioning of the brain.

14:38  Now, one could ask a question: K:
what is the nature of the mind?

14:41  For example I could ask, D:
is the mind located inside the body

14:44  or is it in the brain?

14:46  K: No, it is nothing to do ...
with the body or the brain.

14:48  DB: Has it to do D:มันเกี่ยวข้องกับที่ว่าง
with space or time?

– just a minute – ช้าก่อน

15:00  it has to do with space ...
and silence.

15:07  DB: But not time, right? D:
K: Not time.

15:08  Time belongs to the brain. K:

15:14  DB: You say space and silence. D:
What kind of space?

15:17  It is not the space
in which we see light moving.

15:24  K: Let's look around K:
the other way.

15:30  Thought can invent space.

15:34  DB: In addition, D:และยังมีที่ว่าง
we have the space that we see,

15:37  and thought can invent ...
different kinds of space.

15:40  K: And space from here to there. K:

15:42  DB: Yes, the space through which D:
we move, physically.

15:45  K: Space also K:
between two noises.

15:48  DB: Between two sounds. D:

15:51  DB: That is the interval. D:

15:54  That would be called the interval
between two sounds.

15:57  K: Yes, interval K:
between two noises. D:สองเสียง

16:01  Two thoughts. K:

16:03  Two notes. K:

16:07  K: Space between two people. K:

16:09  DB: Yes,
space between the walls.

16:12  K: And so on.

16:14  But that kind of space
is not the space of the mind.

16:18  DB: You say it is not limited. D:

16:20  K: I didn't want
to use the word limited.

16:22  DB: But it is implied. K:

16:23  It is not in the nature D:
of being bounded by something.

16:27  K: No, it is not bounded K:
by the psyche.

16:31  DB: But is it bounded by anything? D:

16:36  DB: The psyche D:
you say is bounded

16:38  because we have said ...
it is limited and so on.

16:41  K: So can the brain

16:44  – that is what I want to find out, K:

16:47  can the brain, ...
with all its cells conditioned, ถูกกำหนดอยู่...

16:53  can those cells ...
radically change?

16:56  DB: We have often D:
discussed this.

16:58  It is not certain that ...
all the cells are conditioned.

17:00  For example,
some people think that

17:02  only a small part of the cells ...
are being used ที่ถูกใช้งาน...

17:04  and the others are inactive, ...
dormant.

17:10  K: Or just touched occasionally. D:

17:13  DB: But those cells that are
conditioned, whatever they may be,

17:16  evidently dominate ...
consciousness now.

can those cells be changed?

17:24  K: We are saying that they can, K:
through insight.

17:29  Insight being out of time, D:

17:34  it is not the result ...

17:38  it is not an intuition, ...

17:44  or desire, or hope, ...

17:46  it is nothing to do D:คุณบอกว่า
with any time and thought.

17:54  DB: You say insight ...
– is it of the mind?

17:56  Is it of the nature of mind,
activity of mind?

18:00  K: Yes. K:

18:02  DB: Therefore you are saying mind D:
can act in the matter of the brain.

18:06  K: Yes, we said that earlier. K:

but this is a difficult point

18:14  – how mind is able ...
to act in matter.

18:18  K: It is able to act K:
on the brain, ผลกระทบต่อสมอง...

18:25  say, for instance,

18:27  take any crisis ...
or any problem.

18:34  – the root meaning of it ...
is something thrown at you.

18:38  And we meet it with all
the remembrance of the past,

18:42  with our bias, and so on. ...

18:45  And therefore the problem
multiplies itself.

18:49  You may solve one problem,
in the very solution of one problem,

18:53  of that particular problem, ...

18:56  as they are doing in politics ...
and so on.

19:00  Now, to approach the problem,

19:06  or to have perception
of the problem

19:09  without any past memories and ...
thoughts interfering or projecting

19:19  in perception of the problem. ...

19:23  That implies that perception
also is of the mind.

19:27  K: That is right. ...
  K:ครับถูกต้อง

19:28  DB: Are you more or less saying D:

19:33  that the brain is a kind of
instrument of the mind?

19:37  K: Instrument of the mind K:

19:39  when the brain ...
is not self-centred.

19:44  DB: Yes, if we think D:
of all this conditioning,

19:49  the conditioning may be thought of ...
as the brain exciting itself

19:54  and keeping itself going ...
just from the programme,

19:57  and this occupies
all of its capacities.

20:00  K: All our days, quite. K:

20:01  DB: The whole capacity D:
of the brain.

20:04  It is rather like a radio receiver
which can generate its own noise,

20:08  it would not pick up a signal. ...
Now, would this analogy be at all...

20:12  K: Not quite. Not very. K:
DB: It is not very good. D:

20:20  K: Would you K:
go into this a little bit?

20:25  Experience is always limited.

20:30  I may blow up that experience
into a kind of fantastic affair

20:36  and then set up a shop ...
to sell my experience,

20:43  but that experience is limited. ...

20:46  And so knowledge
is always limited.

20:51  And this knowledge
is operating in the brain.

20:56  This knowledge is the brain.

21:01  And thought is also
part of the brain,

21:05  and that thought is limited.

21:07  So the brain is operating
in a very, very small area.

21:13  DB: Yes. What prevents it from D:
operating in a broader area?

21:19  What is preventing it from K:
operating in an unlimited area?

21:23  K: Thought.

21:25  DB: The brain, it seems to me, K:
is running on its own, D:ความคิด แต่สมอง...

21:29  from its own programme. ...

21:30  K: Yes, like a computer that is K:
running on its own programme.

21:34  DB: Now, essentially D:
what you are asking is

21:37  that the brain should really ...
be responding to the mind.

21:43  K: That it can only respond K:

21:45  if it is free from the thought ...
which is limited.

21:51  DB: Yes, so the programme D:
does not dominate it.

21:53  We are going to still
need that programme.

21:55  K: Of course, we need it for... K:
DB: Many things, yes.

from the mind then?

22:09  K: Yes, intelligence is the mind. K:

22:12  K: Now we must go K:
into something else.

22:18  Because compassion
is related to intelligence.

22:24  There is no intelligence
without compassion.

22:29  And compassion can only be
when there is love

22:34  which is completely free ...
from all remembrances, จากความทรงจำทั้งหมด...

22:40  personal jealousies ...
and all that kind of thing.

22:45  DB: Is all that compassion, D:
love, also of the mind?

22:49  K: Of the mind. K:

22:51  And you cannot be compassionate

22:53  if you are attached
to any particular experience

22:57  or any particular ideal. ...

22:59  DB: Yes, that is again D:
the programme that is holding us.

23:05  Say, for instance,

23:07  there are those people who go to ...

23:15  and work, work, work, ...
and they call that compassion.

23:18  But they are attached or tied

23:21  to a particular form ...

23:26  and therefore that is merely pity, ...
sympathy, but it is not compassion.

23:31  DB: Yes, I understand that. D:

23:34  We have here two things ...

23:38  which can be แล้วก็มีปัญญาและความเมตตากรุณา...
somewhat independent:

23:40  there is the brain and the mind, ...
though they make contact.

23:46  Intelligence and compassion,
we say, come from beyond the brain.

23:51  I would like to go into the question ...
of how they are making contact.

23:59  K: Contact can only exist K:
between the mind and the brain

24:03  when the brain is quiet. ...

24:05  DB: Yes, that is the condition D:
for making it, ที่จะเกิดการติดต่อกัน...

24:07  that is the requirement ...
for making it.

24:10  The brain has got to be quiet.

24:13  K: Quiet is not K:
a trained quietness.

24:19  Not a self-conscious,
meditative desire for silence.

24:28  It is a natural outcome

24:32  one's own conditioning. ...

24:33  DB: Yes, and one can see D:
that if the brain is quiet,

24:38  then you could almost say ...
it can listen to something deeper.

24:42  K: Then if it is quiet,
it is related to the mind.

24:47  Then the mind can function
through the brain.

24:54  DB: I think that it would help D:
if we could see,

24:59  with regard to the brain, ...

25:00  whether it has any activity
which is beyond thought.

25:04  For example, one could ask, ...

25:06  is awareness part of K:
the function of the brain?

25:11  K: As long as there is awareness
in which there is no choice.

25:21  I am aware, ...
and in that awareness I choose.

25:26  DB: Yes, well, I think D:
that may cause difficulty.

25:30  What is wrong with choice?

25:32  K: Choice means confusion. K:

25:34  DB: It is not obvious D:
just from the word.

25:37  K: Of course, to choose K:
between two things.

25:39  DB: Yes, I could choose whether D:
I buy one thing or another.

25:43  K: Yes, I can choose between K:
this table and that table.

25:44  DB: Or choose the colours D:
when I buy the table.

25:46  K: Yes, this is a better table. K:

25:49  DB: That apparently D:
need not be confused.

25:51  If I choose which colour I want,

25:53  I don't see why
that has to be confused.

25:55  K: There is nothing wrong. K:
There is no confusion there.

25:58  DB: But the choice, D:
the choice about the psyche,

26:01  it seems to me, ...
is where the confusion is.

26:04  The language K:
tends to carry away.

26:08  K: We are talking of K:
the psyche that chooses.

26:11  DB: Yes, that chooses D:
to become really. K:ครับใช่

26:14  K: Chooses to become,

26:15  and also choice exists
where there is confusion.

26:19  DB: You are saying out of confusion D:
the psyche makes a choice

26:22  to become one thing or another. ...

26:25  Being confused,
it tries to become something better.

26:31  K: And choice implies a duality. K:

26:36  DB: Yes, but now it seems ...

26:38  we have another duality
you have introduced

26:40  which is the mind and the brain. ...

26:42  K: No, that is not a duality. D:
DB: That is important to get clear. K:

26:46  What is the difference? D:

26:50  K: All right, let's take K:
a very simple example.

26:55  Human beings are violent,

27:01  and non-violence ...
has been projected by thought.

27:06  And that is the duality ...
– the fact and the non-fact.

27:11  DB: Well, you are saying D:
there is a duality between a fact

27:14  and some mere projection ...
which the mind makes.

27:18  K: The ideal and the fact. K:

27:19  DB: Yes. The ideal is unreal, D:
and the fact is real.

27:23  K: The ideal is not actual. K:

27:31  DB: The division of those two D:
you call duality.

27:33  But why do you
give it that name?

27:35  K: Because they are divided.

27:37  DB: At least they appear D:
to be divided.

27:42  K: Say, for instance, K:

27:44  the totalitarian communist ideals ...
and the democratic ideals, คอมมิวนิสต์...

27:49  they are the outcome of thought ...
which is limited, ซึ่งจำกัดคับแคบ...

27:53  and this is creating havoc ...
in the world.

27:55  DB: Yes. So there is a division D:
which has been brought in.

28:00  But I think we were ...
discussing in terms of

28:02  dividing something ...
which cannot be divided.

28:05  We are trying to divide
the psyche. K:ใช่แล้ว

28:09  K: Violence cannot be divided
into non-violence.

28:14  DB: And the psyche cannot be divided D:
into violent and non-violent.

28:18  K: It is what it is. ...
DB: So if it is violent, K:มันเป็นอย่างที่เป็นอยู่

28:20  it cannot be divided into D:
a violent and a non-violent part.

28:24  K: That is very good! K:

28:28  So can we remain with 'what is,' ..

28:33  not with what should be, ...
what must be, หรือสร้างอุดมการณ์...

28:36  and invent ideals, etc. ...

28:39  DB: Yes, but could we return D:

28:41  to the question of the mind
and the brain now?

28:44  We are saying that is not a division K:
because they are in contact.

28:51  K: We said there is contact K:
between the mind and the brain

28:55  when the brain is silent ...
and has space.

28:58  DB: Yes, so we are saying, D:

29:00  although they are in contact ...
and not divided at all,

29:07  that the mind can still have ...
a certain independence

29:10  of the conditioning ...
of the brain.

29:13  K: Careful, let's see. K:

29:18  Suppose my brain is conditioned,
being programmed as a Hindu,

29:26  and I function, act, my whole life ...
is conditioned by the idea

29:34  that I am a Hindu.

29:37  Mind obviously has no relationship ...
with that conditioning.

29:42  DB: You are using the word 'mind,' D:
it means it is not my mind.

29:46  K: Mind – it is not my mind. K:

29:47  DB: You are discussing mind
universally or generally.

29:49  K: Yes.
It is not my brain either.

29:51  DB: No,
but there is a particular brain,

29:54  this brain or that brain. D:

29:56  Would you say
there is a particular mind?

29:59  K: No. K:ไม่มีครับ

30:00  DB: That is D:นั่นแหละครับ ความแตกต่าง
an important difference.

30:02  You are saying
mind is really universal.

30:04  K: Mind is universal, K:
if we can use that ugly word.

30:07  DB: Unlimited or undivided. D:

30:11  K: It is not polluted K:
by thought.

30:17  DB: But I think for most people D:
there will be difficulty in saying

30:21  how do we know anything ...
about this mind?

30:23  I only know ความรู้สึกแรกคือ
my mind is the first feeling.

30:27  K: You cannot call it your mind. K:

30:28  You only have your brain
which is conditioned.

30:35  You can't say, it is my mind.

30:37  DB: Whatever is going on inside, D:
I feel is mine,

30:40  and it is very different from what ...
is going on inside somebody else.

30:45  DB: At least it seems different K:
at first sight.

30:47  K: I question whether D:
it is different, K:ครับ

30:49  what is going on inside me
as a human being

30:53  and you as another human being. ...

30:56  We both go through ...
all kinds of problems, suffering, ปัญหาสารพัด...

31:00  fear, anxiety, loneliness, ...
and so on.

31:05  We have our dogmas, beliefs,

31:08  and everybody has this. ...

31:10  DB: It is all very similar, D:
but still it seems

31:12  each one of us ...
is isolated from the other.

31:14  K: By thought.

31:16  My thought has created K:
that I am different from you,

31:20  because my body ...
is different from you,

31:24  my face is different from you. ...

31:30  So we extend that same thing ...
into the psychological area.

31:34  DB: Yes, we have discussed that. D:

31:38  But if we say, all right,

31:39  that division is an illusion, K:
perhaps.

31:44  K: No, not perhaps. D:
DB: It is an illusion, all right, มันเป็นมายา

31:48  although it is not obvious
when a person first looks at it.

31:51  K: Of course.

even brain is not divided,

31:58  because we are saying that ...
we are not only basically similar,

32:01  but really connected. ...

32:04  And then we say,
beyond all that is mind,

32:07  which has no division at all.

32:09  K: It is unconditioned.

32:11  DB: Yes, it would D:
almost seem to imply then,

32:13  that in so far as a person feels
he is a separate being,

32:16  he has very little contact ...
with mind.

32:18  K: Absolutely, quite right. ...

32:20  DB: Say, he has no mind.

32:25  K: That is why it is very important K:
to understand

32:28  not the mind, ...
but my conditioning.

32:32  Whether my conditioning,

32:36  can ever be dissolved. ...

32:39  That is the real issue. D:

32:42  DB: Yes.

32:47  I think that the mind ...
– we won't call it the mind – หาความหมายอยู่เสมอ

32:49  but a human being always considers
what is the meaning.

32:52  I think we want to understand
the meaning of what is being said.

32:57  We have a mind
that is universal,

32:59  that is in some kind of space, ...
you say.

33:02  Or is it its own space? ...

33:05  K: It is not in me D:แต่มันมีที่ว่าง
or in my brain.

33:07  DB: But it has a space. K:

33:11  K: It lives in space D:
and silence.

33:15  DB: But it is the space ...
of the mind, right?

33:17  It is not a space like this space.
K: No.

33:21  That is why we said K:
space is not invented by thought.

33:28  DB: Is it possible then D:
to perceive this space

33:31  when the mind is silent? ...

33:34  Or to be in contact with it? K:

33:36  K: Not perceive. Let's see. D:
  K:ลองดูก่อนนะ

33:41  You are asking a question:

33:43  whether the mind
can be perceived by the brain.

33:48  DB: Or at least somehow be aware, D:
an awareness or a sense.

33:54  K: We are saying yes, K:
through meditation.

33:59  You may not like to use that word.
DB: Well, I don't mind. D:

34:03  K: I think it is possible K:

34:10  – you see, ...
that is the difficulty.

34:13  When we use the word 'meditation'
it is generally understood

34:17  there is always ...
a meditator meditating.

34:21  Meditation is really

34:25  it is not a conscious process. ...

34:27  DB: Well, how are you able to say D:
that meditation takes place then

34:30  if it is unconscious? ...

34:32  K: It is taking place K:
when the brain is quiet.

34:37  DB: You mean by consciousness D:
all the movement of thought

34:41  with feeling, desire, will, K:
and all that goes with it.

34:45  But there is a kind of awareness K:
still, isn't there?

34:47  K: Oh, yes.

34:49  It depends on what ...
you call awareness.

34:52  Awareness of what? D:

34:55  DB: Possibly awareness of D:
something deeper, I don't know.

35:06  K: Again, when we use the word K:
'deeper,' it is a measurement.

35:16  DB: Well, let's not use that. D:
But let's say that

35:20  there is a kind of ...

35:22  which you are simply ...
not aware of at all.

35:25  A person may be unconscious of
some of his problems, his conflicts.

35:30  K: Let's go at it K:ลองพิจารณาตรงนี้
a little bit more.

35:35  If I do something consciously,
it is the activity of thought.

35:41  DB: Yes. D:
  K:ถูกไหม

35:44  Yes, it is thought D:
reflecting on itself.

35:47  K: It is the activity K:
of thought.

35:49  Now, if I consciously meditate,
practise,

35:55  do what I call nonsense, ...

35:59  then you are making ...

36:03  to another series of patterns. D:

36:05  DB: Yes, it is more becoming. K:
You are trying to become better.

36:12  K: There is no illumination
by becoming.

36:16  You can't be illumined
– if I can use that word – แสงสว่างแห่งปัญญา...

36:20  by saying, I am going ...(ถ้าผมใช้คำนี้ได้) โดยการบอกว่า
to achieve illumination.

36:23  DB: It seems very difficult D:

36:26  which is not conscious. ...

36:30  K: That is the difficulty. K:

36:31  DB: Still is it not D:
just being knocked out.

36:35  A person is unconscious ...
if he is knocked out too,

36:37  but you don't mean that. K:
K: Good lord, no! D:

36:39  DB: Or under anesthetic. K:

36:46  K: Let's put it that way: ...

36:49  conscious activity
to control thought,

36:55  to free oneself from conditioning, ...
is not freedom.

37:01  DB: Yes, I think that is clear, D:

37:02  but now it becomes very unclear
how to communicate what else.

37:07  K: Wait a minute. ...

37:11  You want to tell me

37:16  what lies beyond thought.

37:20  DB: Or when thought is silent. D:
K: Quiet, silent.

37:24  What words would you use? K:

the word 'awareness.'

37:30  What about the word 'attention'?

37:32  K: Attention is better for me. K:
DB: Yes. D:

37:39  K: Would you say, K:

37:41  in attention,
there is no centre as the 'me'?

37:46  DB: Well, in the kind of attention D:
you are discussing.

37:49  There is a kind,
which is the usual kind,

37:51  where we pay attention ...
because of what interests us.

37:54  K: Attention is not concentration. K:
DB: Yes, that is concentration.

38:00  But we are discussing D:
a kind of attention

38:03  without this 'me' present, ...

38:05  which is not the activity ...
of the conditioning.

38:07  K: Not the activity of thought. K:
DB: Yes.

thought has no place.

38:16  DB: Yes, but could we say more D:
– what do we mean by attention?

38:22  Now, would the derivation
of the word be of any use?

38:24  It means stretching the mind
towards something – would that help?

38:27  K: No.

38:31  Would it help if we say K:

38:37  concentration is not attention. ...

38:42  Effort is not attention.

38:46  When I make effort to attend
it is not attention.

38:52  Attention can only come into being
when the self is not.

38:59  DB: Yes, but that is going D:
to get us in a circle,

39:02  because we are starting ...
when the self is.

39:04  So here is a person who says

39:08  he begins with the self, ...
he says, 'I am here.'

39:11  K: No, I used the word carefully. K:
Meditation means measure.

39:17  K: As long as there is measurement, K:

39:20  there is no meditation. ...
Let's put it that way.

39:23  DB: We can discuss D:
when there is not meditation.

39:26  K: That is right. K:
Through negation the other is.

39:31  DB: If we succeed in negating D:

39:34  of what is not meditation, ...
then the meditation will be there.

39:38  K: That is right. K:

39:40  DB: That which is not meditation, D:
but which we think is meditation.

39:43  K: Yes, that is right. K:
That is very clear.

39:46  As long as there is measurement,
which is the becoming,

39:50  which is the process of thought, ...

39:54  meditation or silence cannot be. D:

39:59  DB: In there, ...
there is this undirected attention,

40:05  this attention, is it of the mind? K:
K: Attention is of the mind.

40:09  DB: But it contacts the brain, D:
doesn't it? K: Yes. We said that.

40:12  As long as the brain is silent,
the other has contact.

40:19  DB: That is, this true attention D:
has contact with the brain,

40:21  when the brain is silent. ...

40:23  K: And has space.

40:26  DB: What is the space? K:

40:29  K: The brain has no space now, K:

40:32  because it is concerned ...
with itself,

40:35  it is programmed, ...

40:38  and it is limited. D:

40:42  DB: The mind is in its space, ...
does the brain have its space too?

40:47  K: A limited space. K:

40:49  Of course.
Thought has a limited space.

40:52  DB: But when thought is absent, D:
does the brain have a space?

40:55  K: That is right. K:
DB: Does it?

40:56  K: The brain has space, yes.
DB: Unlimited?

41:01  K: No. It is only the mind D:
has unlimited space.

41:09  K: My brain can be quiet K:

41:12  over a problem ...
which I have thought about,

41:14  and I suddenly say, ..."
I won't think any more about it,

41:18  and there is a certain amount ...
of space.

41:19  In that space,
you solve the problem.

41:22  DB: If the mind is silent, D:
is not thinking of a problem,

41:25  then still the space is limited, ...

41:28  DB: but it is open to the attention. K:
K: To the other, to the mind. D:

41:32  DB: Would you say the mind,
through attention, or in attention,

41:38  the mind is contacting ...
the brain?

41:41  K: Yes, when the brain K:
is not inattentive.

41:46  DB: So what happens D:
to the brain?

41:50  K: What happens to the brain
which is to act?

41:59  Wait, let's get it clear. ...

42:02  We said intelligence

42:08  is born out of compassion
and love.

42:11  That intelligence operates
when the brain is quiet.

42:17  DB: Does it operate D:
through attention?

42:21  K: Of course. K:แน่นอน แน่นอน

42:24  DB: So attention seems D:
to be the contact.

42:28  K: We said too, attention
can only be when the self is not.

42:36  You say that love and compassion
are the ground,

42:40  and out of this ...

42:45  through attention. K: Yes, K:
it functions through the brain.

42:52  DB: There are two questions: one is ...
the nature of this intelligence,

42:54  and the second is, ...
what does it do to the brain?

42:59  K: Yes. Let's see. K:

43:04  We must again ...
approach it negatively.

43:07  Love is not jealousy,
and all that.

43:10  Love is not personal,

43:14  but it can be personal.

43:15  DB: But then it is not what D:
you are talking about. K: Yes.

43:20  Love is not my country, K:
your country, I love my god

43:24  – it is not that. D:

if it is from a universal mind...

43:30  K: That is why I say ...
love has no relationship to thought.

43:39  DB: Yes. It does not start D:
in the particular brain,

43:41  originate ...
in the particular brain.

43:43  K: Yes, it is not my love. K:

43:47  When there is that love, K:
out of that there is compassion,

43:51  and there is intelligence. ...

43:56  DB: The nature D:
of this intelligence, ลักษณะธรรมชาติของปัญญานี้...

44:00  this intelligence is able to ...

44:04  – if I could use the word ...
'understand' deeply.

44:09  K: No, not understand. K:
Let's look at it.

44:12  DB: What will it do? D:
Does it perceive?

44:16  K: Through perception it acts. K:
DB: Yes. D:

44:23  Perception of what?

let's discuss perception.

44:32  There can be perception only

44:38  when it is not tinged D:
by thought.

44:44  When there is no interference ...
from the movement of thought,

44:47  there is perception, ...

44:50  which is direct insight ...
into a problem, เข้าไปในปัญหา...

44:56  or into human complex. ...

45:02  DB: This perception D:
originates in the mind?

45:08  K: Does the perception
originate in the mind?

45:12  Let's look at it. K:

When the brain is quiet.

45:21  DB: Yes, but we used the words D:

45:27  – how are they related ...
or what is their difference?

45:29  K: Between perception K:
and intelligence?

45:32  DB: Yes. K: None. D:

45:33  DB: So we say intelligence D:
is perception.

45:36  Intelligence is perception K:
of what is.

45:40  And through attention
there is contact.

45:45  K: Let's take a problem, K:

45:46  it would probably be ...
easier to understand. D:ได้ครับ

45:57  K: Take a problem of suffering. K:

46:03  Human beings have suffered

46:06  through every kind of disease, ...

46:12  and through wrong relationship ...
with each other.

46:17  Man has suffered a great deal.

46:21  Now, can that end? D:
DB: Yes.

46:26  The difficulty of ending that ...
is that it is on the programme.

46:29  We are conditioned
to this whole thing,

46:31  and that is physically K:
and chemically registered.

46:34  K: We are conditioned. D:

46:36  That has been going on K:
for centuries.

46:38  DB: Yes, so it is very deep,
in some way.

46:41  K: Very, very deep. D:

46:43  Now, can that suffering end? K:

46:48  DB: Yes, and it cannot end D:
by an action of the brain

46:51  because the brain is caught K:
in this suffering,

46:55  and it cannot take an action K:
towards its own suffering.

46:58  K: Of course, it cannot.
That is why thought cannot end it.

47:02  Thought has created it.

47:04  DB: And anyway D:
it is unable to get hold of it.

47:07  K: Yes, thought has created K:
the wars, the misery, the confusion,

47:13  and thought has become prominent ...
in human relationship.

47:18  DB: I think people might agree D:
with that and still think,

47:23  as thought can do bad things, ...
it can do good things.

47:26  K: No, thought cannot do K:
good or bad. It is thought.

47:31  DB: Thought cannot get hold D:
of this suffering.

47:33  This suffering being in the
physical conditioning of the brain,

47:37  and chemical, thought has no way ...
of even knowing what it is.

47:44  By thinking, I don't know K:
what is going on inside me.

47:47  I can't change D:

47:48  because thinking will not
show me what it is.

47:51  Now, you are saying ...
maybe there is an intelligence.

47:54  K: But after all,

47:56  we are asking can suffering end, K:
that is a problem.

47:59  DB: Yes, and it is clear D:
that thinking cannot do it.

48:02  K: Thought cannot do it. K:
DB: No. D:ไม่ได้

48:05  K: That is the point. K:
If I have an insight into it...

48:09  DB: Yes, this insight will be D:
the action of the mind

48:13  through intelligence ...
and attention.

48:16  When there is that insight, K:
intelligence wipes away suffering.

48:20  DB: Yes, you are saying that D:

48:21  there is a contact
from mind to matter

48:23  which removes the whole ...

48:27  which keeps us going on ...
with suffering.

48:29  K: That is right. K:

48:31  In that ending there is a mutation ...
in the brain cells.

48:35  We discussed this some years ago,
this question.

48:39  DB: Yes, that mutation just D:
wipes out the whole structure

48:41  that makes you suffer. ...

48:43  K: Yes, it is like I have been K:
going along in a certain tradition,

48:48  I suddenly ...

48:50  there is a change ...
in the whole brain

48:53  which has been going north ...
– and now it goes east.

this is a radical notion ที่สวนกระแส...

49:01  from the point of view
of traditional ideas in science.

49:09  Because if we accept that ...
mind is different from matter,

49:12  then people would find it hard ...
to say that mind would actually...

49:16  K: Would you put it, K:
mind is pure energy?

we could put it that way,

49:21  but say matter is energy too.

49:24  K: Therefore matter is limited, K:
thought is limited.

49:28  DB: Yes, but we are saying D:
that the pure energy of mind

49:30  is able to reach into ...
the limited energy of matter.

49:33  K: Yes, that is right. K:
And change the limitation.

to remove some of the limitation.

49:38  K: When there is a deep issue K:

49:43  or a problem or a challenge ...
which you are facing.

49:52  DB: And we could also add that D:

49:54  all the traditional ways of ...
trying to do this cannot work.

49:58  K: It hasn't worked. K:
DB: That is not enough D:

50:00  because people still might
hope it could, it cannot actually.

50:04  Because thought cannot get at D:
the basis of its own physical,

50:09  chemical basis in the cells ...
and do anything about those cells.

50:13  K: Yes, we have said that K:
very clearly.

50:16  Thought cannot bring about
a change in itself.

50:20  DB: Yes, and yet practically D:

50:22  has been trying to do ...
is based on thought.

50:25  There is a limited area
where that is all right,

50:28  but we cannot therefore

50:30  – as we said, ...
we were discussing before – เราไม่อาจทำอะไรได้เลย...

50:33  do anything about the future ...
of mankind from the usual approach.

50:39  K: When you listen K:
to the politicians พวกนักการเมือง...

50:41  who are so very active ...
in the world, เคลื่อนไหวขันแข็ง...

50:44  they are creating ...

50:48  and to them thought is D:
the most important thing, ideals.

50:54  DB: Generally speaking, nobody ...
can even know of anything else.

50:58  K: Exactly.

51:00  We are saying the old instrument,
which is thought, is worn out

51:06  except in a certain area. ...

51:08  DB: Well, it never was adequate D:
except in those areas.

51:11  K: Of course. K:แน่นอนครับ

51:13  DB: And man has always D:
been in trouble ลำบากเสมอมา...

51:16  as far as we can remember, ...
as far as history goes.

51:18  K: Yes, man has always been K:
in trouble, turmoil, fear.

51:26  We mustn't reduce all this ...
to an intellectual argument.

51:31  But as human beings,

51:35  facing all the confusion ...
of the world, ในโลกทั้งหมด...

51:40  can there be a solution D:
to all this?

51:44  DB: Yes, and that comes back to
the question I would like to repeat.

51:48  It seems there are a few people ...
who are talking about it,

51:53  and perhaps meditating ...
and so on, ต่อกระแสอันกว้างใหญ่ไพศาล...

51:57  but how is that going to affect ...
this vast current of mankind?

52:02  K: Probably very little. K:

52:05  But why do you raise ...
– will it affect?

52:08  it might or it might not. D:

52:13  But then one puts that question: K:
then what is the use of it?

52:17  DB: Yes, that is the point. I think D:
there is an instinctive feeling

52:21  that makes one put the question. ...

I think that is a wrong question.

52:25  DB: That is,
the first instinct is to say,

52:28  what can we do to stop D:
this tremendous catastrophe?

52:31  K: But if each one of us,
whoever listens,

52:36  sees the truth of this, K:
that thought in its activity,

52:40  both externally and inwardly, ...

52:43  has created a terrible mess, ...

52:48  then one must inevitably ask: ...
is there an ending to all this?

52:54  If thought cannot end it, what will?
DB: Yes.

52:59  K: What is the new instrument that K:
will put an end to all this misery?

53:04  There is a new instrument,
which is the mind, and so on.

53:08  Which is intelligence. D:

53:11  But, you see, แต่คุณเห็นไหมว่าความยากลำบาก...
the difficulty is also,

53:15  people won't listen to all this. ...

53:18  They have come to

53:21  both the scientists
and the ordinary layman like us,

53:26  they won't listen. ...

53:28  DB: Yes, well, that is the sort D:
of point I had in mind,

53:30  when I said that a few people ...
don't seem to have much effect.

53:35  K: I think, after all,
few people have changed the world.

53:39  Hitler – whether good or bad,
that is not the point.

53:43  DB: Well, he didn't change it D:
fundamentally.

53:46  K: No, change the world K:
superficially, if you like.

53:49  The revolution of the Bolsheviks,
the communists, has changed,

53:53  but they have gone ...
to the same pattern again.

53:56  Physical revolution
has never changed,

53:59  psychologically, ...
the human state.

54:03  DB: Do you think D:
it is possible that, say,

54:09  a certain number of brains coming ...
in contact with mind in this way,

54:14  will be able to have an effect ...
on mankind which is beyond ต่อมนุษยชาติ...

54:17  just the immediate obvious effect ...
of their communication?

54:20  K: Yes, that is right. K:

54:25  whoever does this may communicate ...
in the ordinary way

54:27  and that will have ...

54:32  but this is a possibility ...
of something entirely different.

54:40  K: I have often K:
thought about it –

54:42  how do you convey all this, ...

54:44  rather subtle ...
and very complex issue, ได้อย่างไร...

54:47  how do you convey all this ...
to a person อยู่ในปลักแห่งจารีต...

54:50  who is steeped in tradition, ...
who is conditioned,

54:55  and won't even take time ...
to listen, to consider?

that is a question.

55:03  One point you could say is that this ...
conditioning cannot be absolute,

55:07  an absolute block, or else ...
there would be no way out at all.

55:11  But the conditioning may be thought
to have some sort of permeability.

55:17  K: After all, K:
the pope won't listen to us,

55:20  but the pope has ...
tremendous influence.

55:23  DB: Is it possible that every person D:
has something he can listen to,

55:27  if it could be found? ...

55:29  K: If he takes a little patience. K:

55:32  Who will listen?

55:34  The politicians won't listen.
The idealists won't listen.

55:39  The totalitarians won't listen.

55:42  The deeply steeped
religious people won't listen.

that is the whole point:

55:51  a so-called ignorant person, ...

55:55  not highly educated ...

55:58  and his profession,
career, money,

56:01  the poor man who says, ...
I am suffering, ที่พูดออกมาว่า...

56:04  please let's end that. ..."

56:06  DB: Well,
but he doesn't listen either.

56:10  He wants to get a job. D:

56:11  K: Yes, of course.
He says – feed me first.

56:16  We have been through all this
for the last 60 years.

56:21  The poor man won't listen,

56:23  the learned won't listen,

56:25  and the deeply dogmatic ...
religious believers don't listen.

56:32  So perhaps, it is like
a wave in the world,

56:37  it might catch somebody. ...

56:40  I think it is a wrong question
to say, does it affect?

56:45  DB: All right, we say that that D:
brings in time and that is becoming.

56:49  It brings in the psyche ...
in the process of becoming again.

56:54  K: But if you say K:
– it must affect mankind.

57:00  DB: Are you proposing D:
that it affects mankind

57:03  DB: through the mind directly, ...
rather than... K: Yes.

57:10  It may not show immediately K:
in action.

57:13  DB: You are taking very seriously D:
what you said, เมื่อคุณบอกว่าจิตเป็นสากล...

57:15  that the mind is universal and is
not located in our ordinary space,

57:21  is not separate. ...

57:23  K: You see, K:
there is a danger in saying this

57:25  – the mind is universal – ...

57:26  that is what some people say
– the mind –

57:30  and it has become a tradition. ...

57:31  DB: Well, you can turn it D:
into an idea, of course.

57:35  K: Of course, K:ทำแน่นอน นั่นแหละ
that is just the danger of it,

57:36  that is what I am saying.

57:41  DB: But really, the question is: D:

57:43  we have to come directly in contact ...
with this to make it real.

57:46  K: Of course, that is it. K:

57:51  They can only เขาสามารถเข้าไปสัมผัสกับจิต
come into contact with it

57:54  when the self is not.

57:56  To put it very, very simply.

58:00  And therefore when the self is not,
there is beauty,

58:04  there is silence, space, ...

58:07  then that intelligence, ...
which is born of compassion,

58:11  operates through the brain.
It is very simple.

58:13  DB: Yes, but would it D:
be worth discussing the self,

58:19  since the self is active ...
widely...

58:24  K: But that is our long tradition K:
of many, many, many centuries.

58:29  DB: Now, is there D:
some aspect of meditation

58:33  which can be helpful here, ...
when the self is acting.

58:36  Suppose a person says,
ok, I am caught in the self,

58:41  but I want to get out. ...

58:43  But I want to know ...
what shall I do?

58:46  I won't use the words K:
– what shall I do –

58:48  but what do you say? D:

58:52  K: That is very simple. ...

58:56  Is the observer K:
different from the observed?

58:59  DB: Suppose we say, yes, it appears D:
to be different, then what?

59:02  K: Is that an idea K:
or an actuality?

59:06  DB: What do you mean? D:

59:08  K: Actuality is when K:
there is no division

59:10  between the thinker ...
and the thought.

59:12  DB: Yes, but suppose I say, D:
ordinarily one feels the observer

59:15  is different from the observed. ...
I say, we begin there.

59:19  K: I'll show you. Look at it. K:

59:21  Are you different
from your anger, ความริษยาของคุณหรือ...

59:24  from your envy, ...
from your suffering?

59:28  You are not. ...

59:29  DB: At first sight D:
it appears that I am,

59:31  that I might try to control it. ...

59:33  K: Not control, you are that.

59:36  DB: How will I see K:
that I am that?

59:39  K: You are your name. D:

59:42  You are your form, body. K:

59:45  You are all the reactions
and actions.

59:48  You are the belief,
you are the fear,

59:50  you are the suffering ...
and pleasure.

59:53  You are all that.

59:55  DB: Yes, but the first experience D:
is that I am here first,

59:57  and those are properties of me, ...

1:00:01  they are my qualities ...
which I can either have or not have.

1:00:04  I might not be angry
or not angry,

1:00:05  I might have this belief
or that belief.

1:00:07  K: Contradictory ...
– you are all that.

1:00:08  DB: But when you say I am that, K:

1:00:11  do you mean that I am that,
and cannot be otherwise?

1:00:15  K: No. At present you are that. ...
It can be totally otherwise.

1:00:19  DB: Yes, so I am all that. ...

1:00:22  Rather than saying,
as I usually do, อยู่เสมอๆ ว่า...

1:00:26  that I am looking ...
at those qualities.

1:00:29  I the observer, ...
I admit that I am anger,

1:00:32  but I feel that I ...
as the observer am not anger

1:00:35  but an unbiased observer ...
who is looking at anger.

1:00:39  Now, you are telling me D:
that this unbiased observer

1:00:42  is the same as the anger ...
he is looking at.

1:00:44  K: Of course.
Like I analyse myself,

1:00:48  and the analyser ...
is the analysed.

1:00:51  DB: Yes. He is biased by what D:
he analyses. K: Of course.

if I watch anger for a while,

1:00:56  I can see that ...
I am very biased by the anger.

1:01:02  So at some stage I say ...
I am one with that anger.

1:01:07  K: Not, I am one with it, K:
you are.

1:01:09  DB: That anger and I D:
are the same.

1:01:11  K: Yes. The observer K:
is the observed.

1:01:14  And when that actuality exists,

1:01:17  you have really eliminated ...
altogether conflict.

1:01:26  Conflict exists when I am
separate from my quality.

1:01:32  DB: Yes, that is because D:
if I believe myself to be separate

1:01:35  then I can try to change it, ...
but since I am that,

1:01:37  it is that is trying to change ...
itself and remain itself

1:01:40  at the same time. ...

1:01:42  K: But when the quality is me, K:

1:01:46  the division has ended.

1:01:51  DB: When I see D:
that the quality is me,

1:01:53  then there is no point ...
to the whole thing.

1:01:59  the quality is not me, ...
then in that there is conflict,

1:02:06  either suppression, escape, etc., ...
which is a wastage of energy.

1:02:13  When that quality is me,

1:02:18  all that energy which has gone, ...
which has been wasted

1:02:22  is there to look, to observe.

1:02:25  DB: But why does it make D:
such a difference ความแตกต่างมากมายอย่างนั้น...

1:02:27  to have that quality being me? ...

1:02:29  K: I am showing it to you. K:
It makes a difference D:

1:02:32  when there is no division ...
between the quality and me.

1:02:37  DB: Yes, when there is no perception D:
of a difference มีความแตกต่างกัน...

1:02:41  then the mind does not K:
try to fight itself.

1:02:48  If there is an illusion D:
of a difference, จิตจะต้องถูกบังคับ...

1:02:49  the mind must be compelled
to fight against itself.

1:02:53  The brain fights against itself. ...
K: That is right. K:

1:02:55  DB: And on the other hand, when D:
there is no illusion of a difference K:ครับใช่

1:02:58  the brain just stops fighting. D:

1:03:00  K: And therefore ...
you have tremendous energy.

1:03:03  DB: The brain's natural energy K:
is released.

1:03:07  K: Energy means attention.

1:03:10  DB: Yes. The energy of the brain K:
allows for attention from...

1:03:15  K: For that thing to dissolve. D:

1:03:17  DB: Yes. Well, wait a minute, K:
because we said before

1:03:18  attention was a contact D:
of the mind and the brain.

1:03:21  But the brain must be ...
in a state of high energy

1:03:24  to allow that contact. K:

1:03:26  K: That is the same thing. D:

1:03:28  DB: A brain which is low energy K:
cannot allow that contact.

1:03:30  K: Of course not. D:

1:03:32  But most of us are low energy K:

1:03:35  because we are so conditioned. ...

1:03:56  DB: Essentially you are saying D:
that this is the way to start then.

1:04:01  K: Yes, sir. Start simply. K:
DB: Yes. D:

1:04:04  K: Start with what is, K:
what I am.

1:04:07  That is why self-knowledge
is so important.

1:04:14  Self-knowledge is not an accumulated

1:04:19  which then looks at, ...

1:04:22  it is a constant learning ...
about oneself.

if you call it self-knowledge,

1:04:27  then it is not knowledge
of the kind you talked about before,

1:04:30  which is conditioning. ...

1:04:31  K: That is right.
Knowledge conditions.

1:04:33  DB: But you are saying K:
that self-knowledge

1:04:35  of this kind D:
is not conditioning.

1:04:37  Why do you call it knowledge?
Is it a different kind of knowledge?

1:04:40  K: Yes.

1:04:41  Knowledge conditions. K:

1:04:43  DB: Yes, but now you have D:
this self-knowledge.

1:04:45  K: Self-knowledge, which is to know K:
and to comprehend oneself,

1:04:51  to understand one's self ...
is such a subtle, complex thing,

1:04:56  it is living. ...

1:04:57  DB: Essentially knowing yourself D:
in the very moment, การรู้ - ตนเอง...

1:05:00  in which things are happening. ...

1:05:02  K: Yes, to know
what is happening.

1:05:04  DB: Rather than D:
store it up in memory.

1:05:06  K: Of course, K:แน่นอน การไม่สั่งสม

1:05:09  through reactions I begin ...
to discover what I am,

1:05:15  and so on. ...

1:05:19  I think we better stop.

1:05:22  Right?
