an insight or a perception,

6:14  is controlled by the mind,

6:19  and it is not the perception,
it is not the insight,

6:24  but the quality of the mind
that is capable of insight.

6:30  Is that right, sir?
Have I put it wrongly?

6:33  Q: Not quite. Q:

6:38  The point seems that there is
the nature of our self-interest

6:44  that we are investigating,

6:47  and when we look, when we admit,

to our self-interest at work,

6:54  we wake up to what is
actually happening,

7:00  we mind what we see,
we don’t like what we see each time.

7:05  Sometimes we do observe it, clearly

7:08  but the problem is when we will not แต่ปัญหาคือ
look clearly at our selfishness,

7:14  at our self-centredness.

7:18  K: We do not see our problems, K:
our selfishness very clearly.

7:30  That’s one of the questions
we want to discuss.

7:35  Any others?

7:38  Q: When we are aware of people Q:
there can possibly be compassion,

7:46  or there can be very cold awareness.

7:49  What is the relationship
between awareness and compassion?

7:55  K: What is the relationship K:
between awareness and compassion?

8:13  Q: We tend to intellectualise Q:
everything, whatever we hear.

8:18  Why is it?
Why don’t we perceive...?

8:26  K: We intellectualise K:

8:33  or when we read something,
a statement of any kind,

8:43  we immediately translate it
into an intellectual process.

8:50  Why does this happen and can that end?

9:00  Q: I perceive that I can be Q:
conscious of my conditioning,

9:06  of certain conditioning,

9:09  yet this will keep on
coming up and up,

9:13  and I feel that, though I’m
aware of it, I’m still caught in it,

9:17  and I can’t seem
to free myself from it.

9:22  K: When I am aware, K:
or observe, my conditioning

9:30  I think I am somewhat free of it

9:33  but I come back to it again,
over and over and over.

9:45  Is that enough for this morning?

9:53  Which of these three questions,
or four questions, should we take?

10:02  Why, as that gentleman asked,

10:08  we don’t have a deep insight into
our selfishness and be free of it?

10:17  Then, the other question was,

10:21  what is the relationship
between awareness and compassion?

10:29  And the other question is

10:32  why does the mind

10:41  and, therefore, avoid the main issue?

10:46  And the other is,
one is aware of the conditioning

10:53  and one, perhaps, slightly
loosens up the weight of the past

11:02  but it recurs, over and over again.

11:07  Now, which of these four questions
do we take up and go into?

11:23  No answer?

11:26  Q: The last one. K:
K: The last one. Q:

11:27    K: คำถามสุดท้าย

11:30  Perhaps the other questions
can be included

11:33  in the last question of this person,

11:37  which is, it seems to happen

11:49  when one is aware
and one is interested,

11:53  that this conditioning
of many, many centuries

12:01  is broken down, somewhat,

12:04  but it comes back again and again.

12:09  What is one to do?

12:12  Shall we discuss that?
Q: Yes, yes.

12:17  K: First of all, K:
if we go into it, seriously,

12:22  and I hope you want
to go into it, seriously,

12:27  we must be very clear
not only of the question

how we approach the question.

12:40  The approach matters, enormously,

than the question, itself.

12:51  Right?
May I go into that a little bit?

12:56  There is this question:

12:59  whether it is possible
to uncondition the mind…

13:04  whether it’s possible for the mind
to uncondition itself

13:11  completely and not occasionally.
That is the question.

13:17  How do you approach that question?

13:21  Because the manner of your approach
will find a solution.

13:32  But if you approach it
with an intellectual concept,

13:39  then your answer will also
be very superficial.

13:44  Right, sir?

13:47  So, how…?

13:48  Or, you want to be
completely free of this conditioning

your desire to be free of it

14:00  is much stronger
than the problem, itself.

14:05  Right, sir?

14:07  Or is it a problem to you, at all?

14:19  Real problem, a real issue,
like wanting food.

14:30  Or is it merely a superficial,
casual question you put on a day…

14:39  you put while you’re here,

14:43  and then you forget
all about it and say,

14:45  ‘Well, next year “ปีหน้าเราจะยกคำถามนี้ขึ้นมา
we’ll trot it out, again’?

14:54  So, do you approach it intellectually,

15:03  do you approach it
with a desire to find an answer?

15:10  All this indicates you are giving
a direction to your enquiry.

15:22  You are directing your enquiry.

15:26  You’re not free to enquire,

15:30  so you will never find the answer

15:33  because you are directing
what the answer should be.

15:40  So, first, please,
if you are serious at all,

15:50  find out how you approach
this problem, the question,

15:56  which is, is it possible for the mind
to completely uncondition itself

16:05  and not occasionally think it is free?

16:12  Right?
Now, how do you approach it?

16:27  The approach is serious

16:35  and the problem is urgent, demanding,

16:42  and the problem says,
‘You must find a way out of this.’

16:49  Right?

16:50  That means you’re
deeply concerned with it

16:57  – as you demand sexual fulfilment,

17:02  as you demand money, hunger
– demand it.

17:12  Or do you say, ‘Well, let’s talk
about it, casually, while we are here

17:18  and, afterwards, we’ll forget
all about the beastly thing’?

17:24  So, if you’re serious,
then let’s investigate, together.

17:33  I am not investigating,
you are investigating,

17:38  you are enquiring,
you’re not accepting a thing.

17:44  Right?

17:46  So, what do we mean by ‘conditioning’?

18:00  Education, in certain ways,
conditions us

18:05  going to school, college, university,
if you are lucky, or unlucky.

18:19  And conditioning by the environment
in which you live

18:29  – the economic condition,
the political condition,

18:34  the cultural conditioning,
the religious conditioning,

18:39  the conditioning of what you eat,
which obviously conditions,

18:47  and your relationship with another,
intimate or not intimate,

18:53  is a factor of conditioning.

18:57  So, this is what we mean
by ‘conditioning.’

19:03  Is that also your perception,
understanding

19:08  – not intellectually but actually –

19:11  that is the nature of conditioning?

if the speaker is born in India

19:22  and is conditioned
by the superstition,

19:26  by the culture, by the family,
and so on and so on and so on,

19:32  that conditioning is part of the mind,
part of the brain,

19:38  part of his action,
part of his reaction.

19:45  Now, can one be aware of all this?

19:51  That’s the first question.

19:55  Can I be aware that I have
been brought up as a Hindu,

20:03  with all the superstitions,

20:07  with all the certain
qualities of excellence and so on?

20:15  Is one aware of that?

20:19  Then, what do you mean
by being aware, conscious, know?

20:33  Is it an intellectual comprehension?

20:41  I’ve understood my conditioning,
intellectually, which means verbally.

20:48  Right?

20:51  That is, when we use the word
‘verbally, ’ we mean by that,

20:56  you hear the statement
that you are conditioned,

21:01  probably, you’ve never even
thought about it before,

21:04  you hear that statement
and make that statement into an idea

21:13  – right?
I hope you’re following this – ทำคำกล่าวให้เป็นแนวคิด

21:17  into an idea, and pursue that idea
that you’re conditioned.

21:23  The idea is not the fact.
Right?

21:32  So, what is it that you do,

21:35  when you say,
‘I know I am conditioned,’

21:39  is it an idea
with which you are familiar,

21:46  or is it an actual fact – fact –
that you are conditioned:

21:56  as a Christian, as a Swiss,

21:58  as a Frenchman or an Englishman,
or whatever it is,

22:02  with all the religious superstitions
and so on and so on?

22:12  If you are aware, or if you know

22:28  as a fact, รู้ดังที่เป็นจริง

22:39  are you aware of it – not an entity
who is aware of something.

22:50  You follow?
You see the difference?

22:54  I wonder if you do.

22:59  When you are hungry,
you say, ‘I’m hungry.’

23:24  That hunger is not different from you.

23:31  Right? Is that right?

23:35  Is what we are saying,
is that correct?

23:40  I’m hungry. You don’t say,
‘I am different from hunger,’ “ฉันแยกแตกต่างจากความหิว”

23:45  you see the fact
and you say, ‘I’m hungry.’

23:50  Right?
The ‘I’ is not separate from hunger.

23:59  Is that a fact?

24:02  Please discuss this, go into it,
I may be wrong.

24:08  Let’s find out
the truth of the matter.

24:11  When you are angry
is that anger different from you,

24:19  or you are that,
at the moment, you are that?

24:23  Later on, you say,
‘I have been angry.’

24:29  Therefore, later on, นั่นคือ หลังจากนั้น
you disassociate yourself from anger.

24:38  Right?

24:41  So, are you aware, or know,

24:45  or cognisant of the fact
that you are conditioned?

24:52  You are conditioned,
not conditioning is different from me.

25:00  You understand the question?

25:03  This is really important,

25:05  if you don’t mind,
go into it, patiently.

25:09  We’ll go into it in different ways.
Let us stick to this one thing

25:14  so that we are very,
very clear about the matter.

25:19  If I say to myself,
‘I am different from my conditioning,’ “ผมแยกแตกต่างจากอิทธิพลกำหนดของผม”

25:25  then I act about the conditioning.
Right?

25:29  Then I do something
about the conditioning.

25:32  I work on it, I say,
‘I must be free from it,’ ผมพูดว่า “ผมต้องเป็นอิสระจากมัน”

25:36  so there’s conflict
between me and the conditioning.

25:42  Right, sir?
Are you doing that?

25:48  Or you are that conditioning?

25:56  Bene? You have understood?

25:58  You are not different
from the conditioning

26:01  because you are Christian,

26:08  you are the result of all the things
that go on about round you

26:14  – so you are that.

26:17  You are not separate
from your conditioning.

26:28  This is a very complex question
because one has to go deeply into it.

26:34  One’s thinking
is the result of the conditioning.

26:42  Right?

26:44  Please, discuss, don’t accept
anything I’m talking about.

26:49  This is not a talk by me.

26:53  We are discussing the thing together,
talking over together.

27:00  The ‘me’ that observes ‘
the conditioning,

27:05  that ‘me,’ or the observer ‘
who thinks he’s observing,

27:11  looking into the conditioning

27:16  is not different,
he’s part of that conditioning.

27:21  If he is different you take a positive
action about the conditioning.

27:28  You say, ‘I must get rid of it,’ คุณจะพูดว่า “ฉันต้องกำจัดมัน”

27:30  ‘I must be free “ฉันต้องเป็นอิสระจากอิทธิพลกำหนด
of my religious conditioning.’

27:38  So, how am I to be free,
what will happen when I am free,

27:46  will I fall into another conditioning,

27:51  what will I do, what practices must
I do to get rid of my conditioning?

27:57  All that takes place,
when the ‘me,’ the observer, says,

28:03  ‘I am different from my conditioning.’

28:08  Is this clear? Can we go on?
No, not for me, clear – clear to you.

28:16  It has been clear to me
since I was twenty.

28:24  Yes, madame?

28:27  Q: (Inaudible) Q: (ไม่ได้ยิน)

28:36  ...there’s nothing to identify with.

28:41  K: No. It is not K:
a question of identification.

28:49  I don’t identify myself
with my conditioning.

28:55  Q: Yeah, but I feel when I, Q:

28:58  when my conditioning that I do,
that I’m not that conditioning.

29:04  K: No, madame, no. K:

29:08  First of all, madame,
do you know you’re conditioned?

29:14  What do you mean
you know you’re conditioned?

29:30  Q: I see just the relations... Q:

29:32  K: You’ll have to speak K:
a little louder.

29:34  Q: I just see the relations Q:
which are coming

29:38  when I eat that, when I do that,
when I do that, when I do this.

29:49  Q: I said, I can see the relation Q:
which is coming when...

29:57  when I eat, for example, this or that,
what kind of feeling that is created.

30:04  K: No, madame. Look… K:

30:12  Say that in German,
somebody will translate it.

30:17  Q: I think I can translate it, also. Q:

30:21  K: I don’t understand K:
what you’re saying.

30:26  Q: I just want to say Q:
that I can’t say that anything is me

30:32  because I can’t say,
I can’t verbalise that what is me...

30:37  K: Ah, I understand. K: ผมเข้าใจแล้ว
I cannot verbalise what is ‘me.’

30:47  Now, wait a minute. Please, sit down.
I understand the question.

30:52  I cannot verbalise what is the ‘me.’

30:58  Can’t you?

31:01  The ‘me’ is your senses ‘

31:10  – wait, wait, madame, wait –

31:14  with which you identify.

31:24  Or, you belong to somebody,

31:29  or you have identified yourself
with a particular nation,

31:39  with a particular name,
with a particular family,

31:46  with a particular group of people,

31:51  with a particular series
of conclusions, ideals.

31:58  If you’re none of these,
actually none of these,

32:05  then you’re free
from the conditioning.

32:09  Q: (Inaudible) Q: (ไม่ได้ยิน)

32:17  …then I see that also
those things are true.

32:23  K: I don’t understand. K:

32:25  Q: If she sees astrology, Q:
then she feels that’s true, also.

32:29  K: What? K:
Q: And it’s also true that…(inaudible)

32:46  K: I’m afraid I don’t understand K:
what you’re saying.

32:51  You’re not explaining clearly, madame.

32:54  I’m not saying…
What is it you want to say?

33:00  Q: I see that one is not Q:
verbalising the root, the source.

33:17  ...we’re just playing in something...

33:30  K: Do you understand what…? K:

33:31  Q: I think she’s asking about Q:
unconscious conditioning, as well.

33:35  K: What, sir? K:
Q: Unconscious conditioning, as well.

33:38  There’s external conditioning,
from the culture,

33:41  and there’s unconscious conditioning.

33:43  K: I can’t hear. K:

33:44  Q: Unconscious conditioning. Q:

33:48  Q: A deeper conditioning Q:
than just name, country, family…

33:57  K: Do you mean, K:
consciously you’re not conditioned,

34:04  but deep down you are?
Is that what you mean?

34:11  If you don’t know what you mean,
how can I…? I give up.

34:33  Please, this is an important subject

34:38  because if you can understand,
very profoundly, this question,

34:44  whether the mind can be really,
completely be free of conditioning.

34:55  If it can, then all our problems
may be resolved, ปัญหาทั้งปวงของเรา อาจมีทางออก

35:03  both economic problems,
social problems,

35:11  and so-called psychological problems

35:14  – the outer and the inner –

35:17  by understanding the whole nature
and the structure of conditioning

35:26  and being completely free from it,

35:29  then the whole thing
becomes entirely different.

35:33  So, what we are saying is:

35:37  are we aware, know, conscious,
recognise that we are conditioned?

35:44  That’s the first thing.

35:46  If you are conditioned,
and you say, ‘Yes, I am,’ และคุณพูดว่า “ใช่ ฉันถูกอิทธิพลกำหนด”

35:53  is the ‘I’ who says,
‘I am conditioned,’ “ฉันถูกอิทธิพลกำหนด”

35:57  is that ‘I’ different ‘
from the conditioning,

36:02  or both are the same?

36:06  This is an important question
you have basically to understand.

36:14  The ‘I,’ the observer who says, ‘
‘I’m conditioned,’ “ฉันถูกอิทธิพลกำหนด”

36:18  that observer is not different from
the thing which he calls conditioning.

36:25  He is that.

36:28  Without that conditioning,
what are you?

36:37  If you have no name,
don’t identify with your body,

36:43  no group, no nationality, no belief,
no religion – you follow?

36:47  if you discard all that,

36:51  where is the ‘I’ ‘ฉัน’ ที่ทั้งเห็นแก่ตัวและทะเยอทะยาน
with all the selfishness, ambition?

36:55  It’s washed away.

36:59  So, this is a very important question,
if you’re at all serious, to go into.

37:07  So, if you see that if the ‘I’ ถ้าคุณเห็นว่า
is separate from the conditioning

37:15  then you act upon it.

37:18  This action you call positive.

37:23  The positive action of this kind
is to struggle with it,

37:30  to find out the causes
of conditioning,

37:35  how deeply you are conditioned,
whether you can do something about it,

37:40  or go to somebody
and ask them what to do

37:45  – they will tell you what to do,
which is practice, ซึ่งเป็นการฝึกปฏิบัติ

37:49  you know, all the rest of it.

37:51  Whereas, the actual fact is,

37:57  the entity that says,

38:01  and I want to be free from it,’ และฉันต้องการเป็นอิสระจากมัน”

38:03  that entity is also conditioned.

38:07  Therefore, there is only conditioning,
not ‘I am conditioned.’

38:14  You have understood
this simple factor?

38:23  So, the battle is over
between ‘me’ and ‘the conditioning.’

38:33  Then we can examine, without division.

38:39  You understand, sir?
Have you got it, really got it?

38:44  That you are part
of that conditioning,

38:49  you are not different
from that conditioning,

38:51  therefore, you cannot
analyse that conditioning.

38:59  Right?

39:03  If you analyse, there is
the analyser and the conditioning

39:09  – you follow?

39:13  So, if you see the actual fact
that the analyser is the analysed

39:25  – right?

39:27  This is not… please,
I happened to discuss this matter

39:32  – the analyser and the analysed –

39:35  with a lot of professional analysts,

39:41  very clever, top people.

‘We don’t understand this.

39:46  Please, go and talk somewhere else.’

39:56  Because it means
they’ll lose their job

40:02  – don’t laugh,
we’re all in that position – เราทุกคนต่างอยู่ในสถานะเดียวกัน

40:05  lose their job, their position,
their victims or patients,

40:09  and so on, so on, so on.

40:13  So, this is really a very,
very serious question.

40:23  The conflict between ความขัดแย้งระหว่าง
the analyser and the analysed

40:28  gives strength to the analyser,
which is the ‘me.’

40:37  The analyser is the past,

40:41  the past is conditioning the analyser.

40:46  Right? Do see this.

40:49  The past is conditioning,
or has conditioned the analyser,

40:54  and the analyser then says, ‘I am
going to analyse my conditioning.’

41:02  So, he’s going round
and round in circles.

41:08  So, to realise the absurdity,
the fallacy of analysis,

41:17  is to break down this division.

41:23  Which means, the conditioning is ‘me.’

41:29  The conditioning isn’t over there,
it is here.

41:36  So, then arises the question,
which is really important, from there:

41:43  then, if I am that, what am I to do?

41:48  You have understood, sir?

41:52  I’m not persuading you to anything.

there’s every form of violence

1:05:49  and so on and so on, so on.

1:05:53  So, I am asking myself,
or you’re asking yourself,

1:05:57  can that drive end?

1:06:00  Q: I ask, who is asking this question? Q:

1:07:47  From that conditioning, there is
a certain drive – to use her word.

1:07:55  The drive is more and more
to be separate,

1:08:00  more and more violence,

1:08:03  as, objectively, it is
happening in the world,

1:08:07  and so on and on and on.

1:08:19  Or must this go on in a refined state,

1:08:25  more and more subtle ways of violence,

1:08:30  more and more subtle ways of conflict,

1:08:34  more and more subtle ways
of keeping up the division

1:08:39  and so on and so on.

1:08:43  That comes to, essentially,
what that lady says.

1:08:51  The speaker says, for himself,

1:08:55  not that you must accept

a total ending of this drive,

1:09:05  which is, in essence, the self.

1:09:09  Then you will say, ‘How does it
