0:27  What shall we talk about?

0:41  If I may, ผมขออนุญาต

0:52  I would like to go into the question

0:57  of what does it mean,
not merely words or ideas,

1:12  that a human being, as we are,

1:17  should bring about a deep,
profound change in himself.

1:32  What does that mean?

1:40  We are using the word ‘change,’
not from this to that

1:52  but, rather, bringing about
a transformation or a mutation

2:02  in the very structure
of our consciousness.

2:11  That I would like to talk about,
if you will permit me.

2:19  Because we human beings
seem to remain in our traditions,

2:31  culture, social, economic structure,

2:38  and psychologically, inwardly

2:42  follow a certain pattern
for the rest of our life,

2:47  whether it be sexual,

2:53  imaginary, fanciful, mythological,

2:59  or a very matter-of-fact,
worldly life.

3:10  That seems to be
the pattern of our existence.

3:15  Either, we are very worldly

3:19  – I mean by that word ‘worldly,’
very superficial,

at the level of the senses,

3:30  with money, position,

3:34  indulgence and so on
– superficially.

3:40  And recognising what society is,
what the economic structure is,

3:48  there are those ก็มีผู้คนที่ต้องการปฏิวัติอย่างนองเลือด
who want a bloody revolution

3:54  along a certain ideology,

4:00  a physical upsetting
of the whole apple-cart.

4:06  You know what I mean
by the apple-cart? Yes.

4:11  Not actually apples,
but the idea of it.

4:17  And they have tried every kind
of physical, economic revolution.

4:25  And, apparently, that hasn’t
brought about a change in man

4:34  – control the environment,

4:46  impose certain economic laws,

4:53  impose according to totalitarian
beliefs and ideologies and so on.

5:02  They have tried every form,
every means,

5:08  or every structure,
economic, social, cultural,

5:11  to bring about เพื่อก่อให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลง
a fundamental change in man.

5:16  Religions have tried it.
Right?

5:24  They say, ‘Forget yourself
and give yourself over to Christ’ และอุทิศตนต่อพระคริสต์”

5:28  – or this person or that person.

5:30  Or, surrender yourself to some guru

5:35  – which is very convenient
for the guru.

5:42  And so on.

5:44  And, apparently,
from everything one observes,

5:52  and this observation is not casual,
or according to one’s desire,

6:01  but if one has observed very closely,

6:06  deep down, fundamentally,
man has not changed

6:10  for millennia upon millennia.

6:14  Now, we are asking, is it possible

6:19  to bring about a fundamental,
psychological revolution?

6:29  Not just trimming the tree
here and there,

6:35  but deep, abiding, enduring,

6:46  irrevocable change, transformation?

6:53  Because we are not happy as we are.

6:57  I don’t know
why we live the way we do.

7:04  We are, generally, miserable,
in conflict, jealousy, anxiety, fear

7:09  – we have been through all that.

7:13  We accept all that.
We are conditioned according to that.

7:20  If you live in a totalitarian state,

7:22  after a certain time
you get used to it.

7:27  You accept all the restraints
and the compulsions

7:31  and the terror and all that.

7:34  So, is it possible for a human being

an enduring transformation?

7:57  That’s what we’re going to – if I may
– we’re going to talk about that.

8:08  One should ask this question
of oneself:

8:15  why we human beings live
the way we are doing?

8:23  And can we live in this world,

8:28  bringing about this fundamental,

8:31  psychological revolution
or transformation

8:35  and yet live in this world, sanely,

8:38  rationally, with an occupation
and all the rest of it?

8:44  May we go into that – หากคุณสนใจ เราขอสืบค้นเข้าสู่เรื่องนี้
if you’re interested in it,

8:51  and I hope you are.

9:00  First of all, the Western world ประการแรก
has divided consciousness,

9:16  the unconscious, deeper,
and the superficial, conscious.

9:23  And one may, temporarily,
bring about a modified change

9:36  in the obvious,
superficial consciousness.

9:44  That superficial consciousness
can adjust itself to anything,

9:50  to terror, to wars, to all the travail
of human beings, superficially.

10:02  And the unconscious, the deeper,
the hidden layers of the mind

10:15  – the mind being consciousness
and we are using that word ‘mind’

10:20  which we have explained, carefully,
which we won’t go into further – เราจะไม่พิจารณามากไปกว่านี้

10:29  and that deep, unconscious entity
is part of the race,

10:40  part of the deep,
unconscious demands, fears

10:52  and a sense of deep sorrow.

11:09  I think it is a great mistake

11:14  to divide consciousness
into these departments:

11:18  conscious and the unconscious.

11:24  Consciousness is whole.

11:29  You may divide it for convenience,
for exploration, for investigation,

11:39  but as long as one maintains
this divisive consciousness,

11:46  the consciousness which is broken up
into the deeper and the higher,

11:53  there is not only conflict

11:57  but also, if one goes into it,

12:04  a sense of the abiding past, always
controlling, shaping the present.

12:17  You’re following?

12:19  Now, please, as I said, as we said,
the speaker is not here.

12:31  You’re asking these questions
yourselves.

12:36  And we are using words
that are common.

12:41  And we are not being driven
by the words.

12:48  You may have read psychological books

12:51  and have certain jargons,
certain ideas,

12:55  and those ideas,
those words, drive you,

13:00  control you, control your thinking,
control your reactions and so on.

13:06  If you do that,
our communication with each other

13:10  becomes extremely difficult.

13:15  Whereas, if we use the word
without all its associations,

13:21  which our education, our reading
has brought about, emotionally or not,

13:28  if we can use the word plainly, simply

13:32  then we are in communication
with each other.

13:36  Right? And I hope you will do this
while we are talking, together.

13:45  Now, can the unconscious,
the deeper, be revealed?

13:53  Or revealed totally, completely,

13:59  exposed to the bright light
of perception?

14:09  Or must it be investigated
through dreams,

14:17  through occasional hunch,
occasional intimation,

14:27  or some form of intuition?

14:33  I, personally, don’t like
that word ‘intuition’

14:38  because you can have
an intuition about anything,

14:42  it may be your own desire,

14:45  prompting you to have
certain feeling about something.

14:52  So, we are not using that word at all.

14:58  So, is it possible to investigate

15:05  the whole content of the deeper
layers of one’s mind?

15:12  Do you understand my question?

15:14  Please, follow!
It’s your life, not mine.

15:28  Since the psychologists
have divided this,

15:34  the conscious mind thinks it can
investigate into the unconscious.

15:41  It can then proceed
to analyse its dreams,

15:48  its superficial activities,

15:54  always from the superficial,

15:58  from the conscious delve
into the unconscious. Right?

16:07  And in that ในการทำเช่นนั้น มีอันตรายอย่างใหญ่หลวง
there’s a great deal of danger

16:16  because the conscious mind

16:22  is full of imaginary, sensory demands,

16:39  beliefs and so on.

16:40  With all that, it is trying to
investigate something which is hidden.

16:48  You are following this?

16:51  And there are those people who try
to investigate their reactions,

16:56  their actions and so on in a group,
telling each other,

17:03  which is the same
as talking to oneself.

17:07  You are following all this?

17:14  And this division
is always maintained.

17:24  So, there is always conflict
between the outer and the inner:

17:33  the outer being conscious,
the superficial, and the deeper.

17:38  I do not know if you have
not noticed all this.

17:43  You don’t have to go
to any psychologist,

17:46  philosopher or any professional
specialist in psychology,

17:52  you can observe all this in yourself,

17:55  if you know how to read yourself.

18:02  And most of us haven’t got
either the energy or the interest,

18:10  or the demand that says,
‘I must find out.’

18:15  But when there is a crisis,
then we go to some specialist,

18:24  hoping he will solve our problems.

18:29  So, we are always
dependent on somebody.

18:53  And he on whom you depend

18:59  perhaps much more divisive,
a little more neurotic

19:10  and has to be analysed
by another analyser

19:13  and so on, the game goes on.

19:22  This is what we are doing:

19:29  depending on somebody
to tell us what to do,

19:38  how to think,
how to move out of our own problems,

19:45  out of our own desperate crises.

19:55  Now, is it possible
to observe our consciousness,

20:04  not at two broken levels, but totally?

20:12  You understand my question?

20:16  Can I observe my consciousness,

20:23  not as the unconscious and
the conscious but as a total unit,

20:30  not divided, but a thing
that is intrinsically whole?

20:42  Right?

20:45  Is it possible to so observe?

20:54  You understand my question?

21:02  It is only possible
when I understand, very clearly,

21:09  that this division is artificial,

21:17  and perhaps it might explain

21:27  but, actually, it is totally
brought about by man, by thought.

21:41  I don’t know if I’m… Right?
Are we following each other?

21:47  You’re asking these questions,
yourself,

21:50  I’m not asking you to ask them.

21:57  So, we are asking:
is it possible to observe

22:05  without any direction,
without any distortion,

22:11  this whole movement of consciousness?

22:20  It is possible only
when you have no direction.

22:29  Which means the moment you have
a motive you give it a direction.

22:38  Right?

22:40  The moment you want to get something
out of it, it becomes distorted.

22:49  If you say, ‘Well, I must go ถ้าคุณพูดว่า
beyond this limited entity’ “ฉันจะไปให้พ้นจากความเป็นตัวตนอันจำกัดนี้”

22:55  – the very desire that wants to go
beyond this limit

23:00  is born out of its own conditioning,

23:05  therefore, it is still distorted.

23:11  I hope you’re following all this.

23:17  So, is it possible to observe,
without direction,

23:25  without motive,
without reward and punishment

23:32  is that possible?

23:36  Don’t say, ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’

23:39  One has to find that out for oneself,
for yourself.

23:45  Can you observe your wife, your girl,
whatever it is you’re observing,

23:51  without a motive,
without a direction,

23:58  without wanting something out of it?

24:09  Which means, then นั่นหมายถึง
your whole attention is there

24:17  because there’s no deviation.
You’re following this?

24:24  Then you are แล้วคุณจะตื่นตัวและตระหนักรู้อย่างสมบูรณ์
completely alert and aware.

24:38  And then, only, เมื่อนั้นเท่านั้น จึงเป็นไปได้ที่จะสังเกต
it is possible to observe

24:43  this whole phenomenon
of consciousness in action.

24:58  And can you observe without all that?

25:05  So, we say, ‘As it is not possible
to do it, instantly,

25:11  I will practise, I’ll gradually,
day after day, cultivate attention.’

25:23  Right?

25:28  Practise a sense of awareness

to this thing called living?

1:14:22  Or say, ‘Yes, marvellous idea,’

1:14:28  and carry on our daily,
monotonous, useless life?
